The evening was normal enough, or so it seemed. A young scientist left his beachside home in a boat. The young man specialized in Marine Biology and was out to attempt to study a night-dwelling fish. He went out alone, working on his own free time, but strong winds and strong currents knocked him out of the boat just as he was about to send his net down in hopes to catch the glowing night-fish that had been recently discovered so close to the shore. He got tangled in the net and was unable to surface himself. He was drowning, but a creature of the deep had been watching him. Possibly as a source of food, but also maybe out of curiosity. The creature freed the scientist from the net and brought him back to the shore. The human only saw the mythical beauty for a few brief seconds in rushing water and the dim rays of the moon as he fought off the darkness that could have been death if not for the beautiful creature. The merperson left the human on the beach, waiting in the water until someone found them and took them to the hospital. The human never got to thank their savior.
The scientist hired a crew of fishermen to search for this beauty and offered an award to anyone who could give him information. He gathered many myths and stories from around the world and even examined the tabloids for any signs of what he saw, though very few actually matched what he was looking for. This only opened up the possibilities of there being more than one species of merperson - so much studying to do! His main task, though, was to search for his savior and thank him and learn a little about him. He wanted to offer his protection to the creature. The scientist was mocked for his beliefs in the myths of mermaids; but he had a few who believed in him.
